Editorial policy
The standards the Publishers and Publishnews newsroom works by.
[PENDIENTE: this text is a proposal. The editors must review it, approve it and set the date from which it applies.]
Independence
We publish what is news for the people who work in Spanish-language books, whoever it is about. Decisions about what is published, how and when rest with the newsroom and its editors. No advertiser, institution or group company may commission, review or veto a story before it is published.
Publishers and Publishnews belong to Lantia Publishing, a group that also publishes books under its own imprints, such as Caligrama and Círculo Rojo. That is why:
- When a story is about the group or one of its imprints, we say so in the piece.
- Reviews of books published by the group's imprints say so next to the book's details.
[PENDIENTE: they do not yet. All 37 reviews in the Self-publishing (Autoedición) section are of books from group imprints (Círculo Rojo, Caligrama, Universo de Letras, Samarcanda); this must be shown on those reviews before the policy is approved.]
- When we report on a fair or an institution we have an agreement with — as its official magazine or media partner, for instance — we say so too.
Sources
- We check facts and attribute every piece of information to its source. If we start from a press release, a statement or another outlet, we say so.
- Figures carry their origin: the report, the organisation, the period.
- We use anonymous sources only when it is the only way to publish information in the public interest and the editors know who the source is. We say so in the text.
- Quotations are verbatim. Cuts are marked […].
- Before publishing a critical story, we give the person or company concerned the chance to respond.
News, opinion and advertising
Every piece says what it is:
- News. News stories, reports, features and interviews. They report facts and are signed by their author or by the newsroom.
- Opinion. Columns, op-eds and criticism, in Opinion and in the magazine's reviews. They carry their author's name and express the author's view, not the magazine's.
- Advertising and sponsored content. Anything published because a third party pays for it is clearly labelled "Advertising" or "Sponsored content", with the name of whoever pays for it, as required by article 9 of Spain's General Advertising Act and article 20 of its Information Society Services Act (LSSI). The newsroom does not write advertising copy that could be mistaken for news.
If a trip, an accreditation or an invitation to a fair or a launch was paid for by its organiser, we say so at the foot of the report.
Corrections
When a published fact is wrong, we correct it in the piece itself as soon as possible and add a note at the end saying what was corrected and when. We do not take pieces down to hide a mistake. Typos that do not change the meaning are fixed without a note.
Requests for corrections go to redaccion@publishnews.es.
Replies sent to us under Spain's right-of-reply law (Organic Law 2/1984) are published in full, without comment, within three days of receipt and with prominence similar to that of the original story. Next to the original story in our archive we add a visible notice that points to the reply (article 85 of Organic Law 3/2018).
Anyone who considers that an old story no longer reflects their situation because of later events can ask us, giving reasons, to add an update notice next to it (article 86 of the same law).
Publishnews stories on this site
publishers.news brings the magazine and the daily news together in one place. The stories in News come from the Publishnews newsroom. While publishnews.es remains open, what is published there reaches this site automatically and each piece links to its original; pieces edited in this site's newsroom are no longer replaced by the publishnews.es version.
Stories are signed with their author's name or, when they are desk pieces, as "Redacción Publishnews".
Artificial intelligence and machine translation
The English edition of this site is produced as follows:
- Headlines and standfirsts are translated from Spanish into English with an artificial intelligence system, and the editors check them.
- The full text of articles is published in Spanish only. The titles of reviewed books are not translated.
- The newsroom is responsible for these translations as for any other text: if one is wrong, it is corrected like any other mistake.
[PENDIENTE: as of 13 October 2026 almost no translation is marked as reviewed in the database (column en_status). Until the editors have checked them, this page and "About us" should say that review is under way, or the unreviewed ones should be labelled as machine translations.]
Every piece is signed by its author or by the newsroom, which answers for it. If an artificial intelligence tool is involved in writing a text beyond correcting it, transcribing it or helping with research, a member of the newsroom checks it before it is published.
[PENDIENTE: decide whether readers should be told, piece by piece, when artificial intelligence has been involved in writing a text, and how.]
Contributions
Op-eds by outside contributors are published under their name and, where relevant, with their position or their connection to the subject. Proposals are welcome at redaccion@publishnews.es; whether to publish them is the newsroom's decision.
